In memoriam: André van der Walt
It is with sadness that we inform you that a great scholar and friend of the Ius Commune Research School, Prof. André van der Walt of the Faculty of Law of Stellenbosch University, passed away on 4 November.
André had many long standing contacts with many scholars in the Netherlands and with many members of the Ius Commune Research School. In 1996 he published (jointly with Gerrit van Maanen) in the Ius Commune Europaeum Series a volume on property law on the threshold of the 21st century. André was also a regular visitor of the annual conferences of the Ius Commune Research School. During the 2006 annual conference that was held in November in Utrecht he brought a group of South-African and European Ius Commune scholars together, brainstorming on the consequences of globalisation for private law. As a result of that discussion he organized a first exploratory research workshop at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS) on 6-8 December 2007 in which many Ius Commune scholars participated. A second conference was held in December 2008, again organised by André at the Stellenbosch University Law Faculty and more particularly at his South-African research chair in property law. The results of that collaboration were published in 2010 in a book edited by André and Michael Faure (Globalisation and private law. The way forward).
Although we knew that André was ill for many years he still came regularly to the Netherlands and held an important keynote speech on 28 November at the 2014 annual conference at the University of Edinburgh.
André collaborated with many scholars in the Ius Commune Research School, more particularly those active in the group on property law.
Many of the members of the Ius Commune Research School who visited Stellenbosch University enjoyed the hospitality of André and his wife Christa and many were welcomed to his home to enjoy his remarkable knowledge of South-African wines.
André van der Walt has been of particular importance for the longstanding collaboration between the Ius Commune Research School and the South-African colleagues, more particularly those of the Faculty of Law of the University of Stellenbosch. It is a great scholar and friend that will be missed by many in the Ius Commune Research School.
On behalf of the Ius Commune Research School we offer our deepest condolences to his wife Christa, his family and to the colleagues at the Law Faculty of the University of Stellenbosch.
