Abstract:
The thesis critically addresses conventional demands for a greater role for the national Parliaments of the EU Member States. The very term "the national Parliaments" and its implications are discussed by way of preliminary critique. Subsequently, existing proposals to strengthen the national Parliaments, for the different existing purposes, such as to stimulate debates over European integration, to enhance parliamentary control over the national Governments or to award direct and collective powers to the national Parliaments, are addressed one by one. The conclusion places the discussion within the framework of competing normative approaches to parliamentarism, sovereignty and legitimacy in the European Union.
