Cross-border access to social security in EU Member States: Securing social protection for families

Abstract:
Mobile EU citizens and their families find themselves in a legally precarious position regarding their access to social security in cross-border settings, given the disharmonious interaction between different welfare systems of more than one EU Member State. The EU regulatory regime is not capable of eliminating all problems and leaves plenty of issues unaddressed, impeding the full realisation of freedom of movement of persons. This PhD research will focus on the under-researched position of cross-border families with regards to access to social protection and suggest possible solutions to their problems.
