Valuing biodiversity in the Flemish law and practice
PhD student: Mr E. Schoone

Duration: 16/10/2022 - 15/10/2026
My research is framed within the interdisciplinary INVABIO project. The project will establish a framework for valuing damages to individual specimens for judges, administrative agencies and permit issuers. This is conducted jointly with ecologists and economists. The doctoral research involves the valuation of biodiversity within Flemish environmental management law, valuation by criminal judges, administrative bodies and permit providers. This is studied using a very large database of decisions, sanctions as well as permits with project EIAs. Permit practice is assessed against European standards. In addition to classical legal research, interdisciplinary research methodologies such as discourse analysis and quantitative data research are used.
